Sustainability Reporting Manager

Transparency on climate action and sustainability & ESG reporting is increasingly not only a voluntary expectation, but a regulatory requirement, with emerging legislation in the UK, EU, US, and other markets. This includes both reporting directly against our Sustainable In a Generation (SiG) Plan metrics and our participation in other external reporting platforms such as CDP, TCFD, RE100, Oxfam’s BtB, customer scorecards, etc. As many of these external platforms are still evolving, this role will play an influencing role in shaping the questions we are asked. Mars’ maturing sustainability program has created a wealth of metrics and actions on which to report. This role will have unified responsibility for Mars’ sustainability reporting and will contribute to the quality and efficiency of our reporting, the strength of Mars’ corporate reputation, and continued improvement of our Sustainable in a Generation Plan.

What are we looking for?

  • BS in business, engineering, science or other field grounded in management of quantitative information. Preferred qualification: a further degree focused on sustainability or environmental management or equivalent experience

  • 5 + years of experience with ESG reporting such as CDP and TCFD and with metric systems, reporting and dashboards in common sustainability fields such as GHG emissions

  • Strong English language communication and report writing skills covering both technical and narrative information.

  • Influencing skills – ability to convey the importance of this work to internal associates is critical to successful completion of reporting.

  • Project management and effective teamwork in multi-discipline, functional and cultural environments with challenging scope and deadlines

  • Self-motivated and ability to perform assigned duties independently with limited direct supervision

  • Physical and/or mental requirements: Travel may be required including international travel (<25%)

What will be your key responsibilities?

Reporting Process Development

  • Create, populate and own ongoing development of a structured process and any necessary supporting systems covering our external reporting needs.

  • Transition from the current state of each external reporting platform being managed as a discrete activity to management of external reporting as a single activity with multiple outlets.

  • In partnership with the broader sustainability team, recommend reporting platforms for participation and maintain a 12+ month forward looking reporting calendar.

  • This includes both the process of collecting inputs to reporting as well as management of our quantitative and qualitative responses.

Internal Data Provider Network

  • Strengthen the network of internal data providers required to support our external reporting across multiple business functions.

  • Support data providers to reduce the effort required to respond through forward visibility, simplified processes and direct support/coaching.

  • Collaborate with the Sustainability Accounting & Governance team to ensure correct inputs from Mars’ internal sustainability accounting platform

Reporting Platform Engagement and Benchmarking

  • Influence external platform requirements to better align with the objectives Mars is pursuing under the SiG Plan.

  • Recruit other associates to support platform development initiatives when appropriate

  • Maintain a landscape review of current and potential future reporting platforms

  • Benchmark Mars’ performance with peers and provide insights to the business to improve performance and influence reporting platforms

  • Collaborate with other functions to support fulfillment of compliance requirements

Customer Scorecards

  • Develop a customer reporting landscape and monitor future trends.

  • Support segment/unit requirements for customer scorecards such as Walmart’s scorecard.
