POSITION OVERVIEW
This position is responsible for inventing, leading, developing/validating, and commercializing new growth products within our innovation process (new product invention and development) with a particular emphasis on new molecule synthesis. The position requires a strong aptitude and desire for experimental work, use of scientific method, and clear communication of results. The applicant will primarily be involved in customer contact, ideation, proof of concept, development and validation of new technologies, though they may also be called to assist in regulatory, intellectual property, pilot plant, process development, and product support as appropriate. This R&D based position may be supported (and responsible to manage) at least one technical administrative associate. The position is located at Milliken & Company's corporate headquarters in Spartanburg SC and reports to the Group Leader for PCI synthesis. Occasional to frequent visits to external customers, production facilities, and conferences are expected.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage laboratory, laboratory safety, equipment, and administrative technical associates
Manage projects with cross functional teams (from inception to commercialization)
Synthesize new molecules to support growth projects
Invent, protect, contribute, and/or implement key growth products
Become technology leader in key technical areas
Defend current business, and win new business via customer problem solving, new ideas, product development, competitive assessment, and application value measurement
Learn and apply new applications, technologies, and methods
Independently lead projects and laboratory experiments
Secure sustainable solutions via IP
Active member of laboratory safety and quality community (lead and/or contribute)

QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED
Ph.D. degree in a chemical discipline with a strong emphasis on organic synthesis (e.g. organic chemistry, polymer synthesis, medicinal chemistry)
Strong history as an experimentalist using scientific method
Familiarity with common characterization techniques such as NMR spectroscopy, UPLC, and IR spectroscopy.
Record of independent invention and turning them into innovation, creativity, and collaborative achievements
Record of the clear communication of scientific achievements (publications, presentations, or patents)
Strong communication/presentation skills and communication of value/implications
History of collaborative spirit, leadership, critical thinking, and organizational skills

QUALIFICATIONS – PREFERRED
3-5 years of experience in industry or postdoctoral work
Application knowledge or technology knowledge of personal, household and fabric care
Application knowledge or technology knowledge of polyurethane foam
Successful history in commercializing new technologies
Technology knowledge in: Fluorescence, Stabilizers, UV-absorbers, Coatings, Colorants, Polymers,
Experience with consumer package goods formulated products
Demonstrated Problem-solving experience
Successful project management experience
