Terrestris Global Solutions is seeking to hire a professional Paper Conservator in support of the Army digitization project. The digitization project is to scan all archival materials held by the US Army Heritage & Education Center. There are 4,182 collections occupying 24,000 linear feet. Collection materials range from modern paper to extremely delicate, e.g. antique, vellum, parchment, paper documents, and scrapbooks. The right candidate shall be motivated and excited to support the federal government in its historical preservation of its heritage material and should be able to commute to and within the Carlisle Barracks, which is Nestled in the beautiful Susquehanna Valley, Carlisle Barracks is one of our nation's oldest military installations with deep rich history of the US Army.

Responsibilities

· Provide professional paper conservation support for the USAHEC digitization project. Conservation support includes:

1. Conservation treatment of 140 legal-size document boxes (15 ¼ x 5 x 10 ¼) of archival materials identified during the USAHEC digitization project.

· Perform professional paper conservation treatments in support of the USAHEC digitization project. Services include producing treatment plans for all treatments, conducting treatments (e.g. mending of tears, adhesion of detached pieces, flattening of rolled photographs, adhesive removal, de-acidification, encapsulation, and stabilization of scrapbooks), and producing final treatment reports for all completed treatments.

· Archival/conservation-grade storage solutions shall be created for all completed treatments using Government provided supplies.

· Perform paper conservation treatments at all levels of complexity, providing full written and photographic documentation.

· Apply appropriate research techniques, including use of instrumental methods, in the examination and analysis of collection materials.

· Perform professional paper conservation treatments in support of the Historical digitization project.

· Produce treatment plans for all treatments, conducting treatments (e.g. mending of tears, adhesion of detached pieces, flattening of rolled photographs, adhesive removal, de-acidification, encapsulation, and stabilization of scrapbooks), and producing final treatment reports for all completed treatments.

· Archival/conservation-grade storage solutions shall be created for all completed treatments using Government provided supplies.
Other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

· Master’s degree from a recognized graduate art conservation education program with a specialization in paper conservation

· Ability to Life 1.6.8.1 Lift a maximum of 35 lbs.

· Ability to write and communicate clearly in English

· Three (3) years specialized experience in the field of paper conservation

· One (1) year of experience in the treatment of photographs and scrapbooks

· Ability to complete and pass a federal background investigation within 30 calendar days of employment, and must maintain the level of security required to access historical site on base.

Preferred Qualifications
.

· Experience carrying out conservation treatment of works on paper in libraries, special collections, archives, or museums.

· Excellent oral and written communication skills.

· Experience collaborating with curators, special collections managers, and conservators in a team environment.

· Demonstrated knowledge of materials and technologies encountered in the creation and conservation of the full range of works on paper.

· Demonstrated knowledge of the nature of paper and inks, colorants, adhesives, and material technologies as applied to the creation of artistic, literary, and documentary works.

· Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
