Create and provide an appropriate environment and experience to foster the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive growth of infants and toddlers. Develop strong relationships with parents to support the growth and development of their infants and toddlers. Create a classroom environment that encourages the social and emotional, physical, and cognitive growth of the children in care.

Responsibilities

· Create a constructive classroom environment.

· Support the development of infants and toddlers and provide a secure base for their growth.

· Function as a role model for the staff in qualities of personal warmth and sensitivity, including, but not limited to sense of humor and flexibility. Exercise these qualities in relation to children, staff, and families.

· Plan and provide an environment that makes interaction possible.

· Model appropriate positive discipline.

· Be aware of job role as it relates to other center staff.

· Work as part of center team.

· Utilize proper channels of communication in center.

· Develop and implement a curriculum that reflects the educational goals, objectives, and philosophies of the center.

· Organize, arrange, and maintain a safe and healthy learning environment.

· Establish an ongoing daily schedule which allows for flexibility and which is reflective of the overall developmental goals for the children in care.

· Establish a secure, predictable environment that supports the cultural diversity of infants and toddlers in care.

· Demonstrate and communicate with classroom team how individual differences are being met by the choice of materials, resources, and program planning.

· Nurture infants and toddlers.

· Foster children’s curiosity and enable infants and toddlers to expand their capabilities.

· Plan and evaluate the daily routines and classroom environment.

· Attain knowledge of each child through observation, assessment, interaction, and ongoing record keeping. Develop an appropriate program for the individual child.

· Select the appropriate equipment, materials, and activities that support infant and toddler development.

· Maintain flexibility and adaptability.

· Maintain willingness and eagerness to learn with a commitment to excellence.

· Uphold a nonjudgmental perspective.

· Maintain a sensitivity and respect for cultural differences.

· Reflect on work and self.

· Exhibit genuine warmth and respect for the people we serve.

· Bring a sense of fun and enjoyment to work.

· Establish a communication between classroom and home to foster understanding of goals, procedures, and program.

· Provide opportunities to maximize communication between infant/toddler teacher and child, infant/toddler teacher and parent, and child and peers.

· Arrange periodical parent contacts to share the child’s daily routines, growth and development in program, and learn about parent concerns.

· Communicate child’s individual goals and objectives according to Early Head Start guidelines.

· Supervise assistant and collaborate with classroom team.

o Encourage initiative.

o Promote cooperative planning.

o Motivate leadership abilities.

o Utilize constructive criticism and concrete suggestions for improvement.

· Establish and participate in regular meetings with classroom team that include:

o Program planning and assessment.

o Sharing observations of children.

o Writing and reviewing children’s records.

o Individualizing goals for each child in care.

· Follow center procedures for reporting personal lateness, absence, and sickness.

· Carry out established procedures for handling emergencies, including, but not limited to fire drills, late pickup, and accidents.

· Remain open to positive suggestions from Education Coordinator and other designated supervisors; accept constructive criticism.

· Attend staff meetings, committee meetings, training sessions, and parent meetings when applicable.

· Attend job related outside courses, workshops, lectures, and conferences.

· Seek appropriate publications to assist in improvement of job performance.
