Lead H&S (Health & Safety) Professional
Summary
This position provides comprehensive health and safety support to assigned geographic and/or organizational sections. Responsible for most complex technical work in a wide range of health and safety disciplines to achieve compliance with the organization’s HS standards and with federal, state and local regulatory requirements. Works under consultative direction toward predetermined goals and objectives. Assignments are usually self-initiated. Leads development, implementation and maintenance of programs, systems and procedures. Uses extensive experience to anticipate and prevent HS incidents and hazards. Leads investigation of incidents, accidents, injuries, or complaints. Recommends improvements in most complex processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment, to minimize the hazard potential. Leads development and conduct of employee training, emergency preparedness and quality assurance programs. Provides most complex regulatory interpretation and technical advice. Maintains expert knowledge of specific requirements imposed by government agencies and expert knowledge on the scientific and technical aspects of regulatory requirements and how they may impact company operations. Acts as a lead person or technical expert providing functional direction and training for health and safety programs. Advancement to senior level requires specific business need toward predetermined goals and objectives.
Responsibilities
- 50%: Serve as single-points-of-contact and subject matter expert to support most complex health and safety activities that require comprehensive knowledge and advanced experience in order to provide compliance solutions to HS issues. Provides lead direction and technical expertise for most complex work activities in order to comply with health and safety laws, regulations and corporate requirements. Develops, implements and recommends improvements in most complex programs, systems and procedures. Provides most complex regulatory interpretation and technical advice. Leads HS compliance and management system audits.
- 40%: Interacts with management and customers to ensure consistent and thorough implementation of HS programs, policies, and procedures. Anticipates and prevents HS incidents and hazards along with leads investigation of incidents, accidents, injuries or complaints.
- 10%: Leads section and department administrative and development functions including budgeting, special projects and assignments, employee training, emergency preparedness and quality assurance programs.
Basic Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Health and Safety, Engineering or Science with minimum of 8 years of related experience. In lieu of a degree, a high school diploma/GED with minimum of 15 years related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Science, Engineering or Health and Safety
- Project Management Professional or Professional Engineer Certification
- CHMM, QEP, CIH or CSP Certification
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Expert knowledge of most complex health & safety regulatory compliance requirements, scientific practices, quality assurance principles, and auditing principles. Experience in negotiating with regulators at the state and/or federal level.
- Demonstrated expert technical skills in health & safety areas.
- Demonstrated ability to lead personnel from diverse groups working toward a complex common objective or initiative.
- Very strong collaboration, communication (both oral and written) and interpersonal skills with a customer-oriented focus. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with top management.
- Demonstrated ability in developing and implementing most complex systems and processes that comply with health or safety laws and regulations, corporate policies and goals.
- Successful track record in supporting H&S compliance at multiple facilities/regions within multiple regulatory jurisdictions.
- Experience in successfully influencing regulators
- Ten years’ experience in power generation or transmission/distribution operations.
- Five 5 years direct health & safety experience
