Essential Job Duties

  • Performs all job responsibilities in alignment with the organization's core values, mission, and vision.
  • Lead and organize the City of Durango’s approach to community engagement. This includes working closely with the executive leadership team and all city departments.
  • Build relationships with the Durango community, including neighborhood groups, businesses, underrepresented communities, non-profits, and community-based institutions such as religious groups and schools.
  • Maintain systems for tracking and reporting progress to share with internal teams and community members.
  • Assists the team in preparing the annual Budget and Strategic Plan and other specialized reports and analyses for management, the City Manager, and the City Council.
  • Create consistent guidelines and goals for the formation of diverse community working groups, committees, and advisory groups, which the City of Durango uses as part of the community engagement strategy for major plans, initiatives, and projects.
  • Partner with staff in other city departments, including the City Council.
  • As needed, implement new and creative engagement tools tailored to different audiences and by different types of projects.
  • Analyze data to inform Strategic Plan and performance results discussions.
Knowledge of:
  • Modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment.
  • Principles of basic report preparation
  • Business correspondence writing and basic report preparation techniques.
  • Basic Understanding of Strategic Planning and performance excellence.
  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Ability to:
  • Learn to understand the organization and operation of the City and of outside agencies as necessary to assume assigned responsibilities.
  • Interpret and grasp large concepts and simplify them.
  • Set well-defined and realistic personal goals, displays a high level of initiative and effort toward. completing assignments on time.
  • Self-manage and work independently.
  • Attend to detail – Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.
  • Use efficient learning techniques to acquire and apply new knowledge and skills, using training, feedback, or other opportunities for self-learning and development.

  • Apply City policies and procedures pertaining to administration.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Work the allocated hours of the position.

City Organization Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Represent the City Manager’s Office, and City of Durango to other City staff and members of the public.
  • Provide quality customer service to individuals needing directions or assistance.


Supervisory Relationships:
Works under general supervision of the City Manager. Adapts broad guidelines to achieve results using independent judgment within policy. Makes management level recommendations as to programs, procedures, and practices .

Fiscal Responsibilities:
Incumbent has authority to purchase supplies and equipment for department, assists with division budget development, and obtains quotes following the purchasing policies and procedures of the City of Durango.

Work Environment:
Work is performed in a typical indoor office setting and is mostly sedentary with periods of mobility and light physical activity Hybrid work schedule will be and option and fully remote may be considered for the right candidate. Possibility of non-traditional work hours; weekends; evenings; and /or beyond an 8-hour day.

Physical and Mental Requirements/Activities:
  • This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, work regularly requires sitting, frequently requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions and occasionally requires walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and reaching with hands and arms.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Will spend a large amount of time viewing a computer screen.
  • Vocal communication and normal hearing are required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • Acceptable verbal and conversation skills to effectively communicate with others via the phone, at meetings and to greet and assist visitors.
  • Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities.
  • Frequent use of phone handset and repetitive use of hand & fingers to operate office equipment, use computer keyboard & computer mouse and to perform other office tasks.
  • Ability to recognize occupational hazards in work activities and take safety precautions.
  • Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions and following directions.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education and Certification: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, public administration, or a related field.

Minimum Experience: Three to five years of experience working in outreach, community engagement or community organizing.
