DESCRIPTION
The Student Health and Well-being (SHW) cluster of the UC San Diego Health System plays a leadership role in creating a strong and active wellness culture at UC San Diego that enables all students to flourish in body, mind and spirit. This includes promotion and the expansion/development of a student health and well-being center, and the transformation of existing departments, under the oversight of the executive director, into a cohesive, trans-disciplinary source of integrated wellness services. The SHW cluster includes the departments of Student Health Services (SHS), Health Promotion Services (HPS), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and SHW Administration.
SHW provides health promotion, counseling and psychological services and primary medical care, including urgent care and support services, to over 42,375 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. Staff consists of physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, pharmacists, optometrists, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, social workers, x-ray technologists, clinical laboratory scientists, medical assistants, health educators, administrative and other healthcare professionals.
Under the general supervision of the Student Health and Well-being (SHW) Insurance & Billing Manager, the Administrative Operations Asst. will provide customer service, administrative and business operations support, including answering phones, assisting in-person visitors, preparing and reviewing correspondence and communications, reports, scanning, e-filing, referral support, medical records requests and other operational needs. Incumbent will provide majority of administrative and operational assistance in the Insurance and Billing Unit. Assist with special projects, initiatives and time-sensitive efforts.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of medical and insurance terminology.
Knowledge of insurance claims processing and interpreting explanation of benefits.
Excellent customer service skills with the ability to answer telephone calls and impart accurate and timely information in a courteous, friendly and professional manner.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, including knowledge of proper business formats, grammar, spelling and punctuation.
Proven organizational and time management skills ability to prioritize and meet deadlines. Ability to take responsibility for a task or assignment and see it through to completion with little or no supervision. Ability to work efficiently, keeping track of many diverse tasks and varying assignments.
Skill to work as part of a team, carrying out any assignments. Ability to work with a variety of individuals in a pleasant and courteous manner.
Proficient keyboard skills, including typing, word processing and 10 key calculator. Skill in the use of other standard office machines.
Skill to use word processing, database, calendar, spreadsheet, E-mail, and Web based software. Skill to use (some or all) Microsoft Exchange, Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and other software and Web based functions.
Experience with automated storage and retrieval systems, and electronic records.
Ability to maintain a professional demeanor during interactions with a wide variety of personalities in demanding situations. At all times, demonstrate the characteristics of professionalism in attire, attitude, conversation, behavior and attentiveness to others; uphold the UCSD Principles of Community and promote a positive and collaborative team environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of federal HIPAA and FERPA regulations and state health insurance laws.
- Knowledge of basic bookkeeping and accounting principles and ability to understand and work with general and UCSD accounting reports.
- Knowledge of and ability to use UCSD on-line information systems.
- Knowledge of UCSD and Student Health Service policies and procedures.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
- Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
- Must be able to work in various locations and hours, based on clinical and operational needs.
- Occasional overtime may be required.
- Ability to telecommute for work, if/when needed and operationally feasible, as determined by department.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $40,700 - $78,258 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $19.49 - $37.48
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
Job offer is contingent on successful engagement in the UC COVID-19 Vaccination program (fully vaccinated with documented proof or approved exception/deferral).
If applicable, life-support certifications (BLS, NRP, ACLS, etc.) must include hands-on practice and in-person skills assessment; online-only certification is not acceptable.
